Young travelers familiar with the neon paradise that is Tokyo's SHINJUKU district know it as a Blade Runner-esque haven for electronics shops, pachinko machines, and clubs of every description. What some don't realize is that less than 30 years ago the area was nothing more than an ordinary block of "superflat" real estate in a then-burgeoning metropolis.
