NEXT BIG THING///AUREL SCHMIDT’S NATURAL BEAUTY…

October 25, 2007  |  Uncategorized  |  Comments Off

Here at Supertouch, we're obsessed with technique, and pure, unadulterated rendering power. NYC-based 24-year-old Canadian artist AUREL SCHMIDT has those qualities to spare. Emerging from the East Village art scene with a style as distinct as her name, Schmidt is the rare artist with profound imagination, sheer technical power and a fantastic sense of humor who is able to switch between hyper-detailed obsessive/compulsive technical rendering and fun, simple, Pop-inspired imagery with ease. Her medium of choice remains pencil & crayon on paper but the incredible detail and complex tones of her tightly executed imagery give her fantastic tableaux’s the depth of oil paintings. Among portrait artists, Schmidt remains an anomaly. The faces she paints are not those of humans or animals, but of imagined beings woven together with the found debris of the natural world, including insects, flowers, rocks, and dead animals, which she mixes in images of household trash, giving her work a rare and grisly beauty. LA///FIRST LOOK: TAKASHI MURAKAMI’S “© MURAKAMI” AT MoCA

October 19, 2007  |  Uncategorized  |  Comments Off

murprevdsc00075.jpg
Hang time with the master...

Had the chance to spend some time catching up with TAKASHI MURAKAMI the other day as the Pop demigod prepared for the grand opening of his forthcoming retrospective show, "© Murakami" set to debut publicly on October 29th at MoCA's GEFFEN CONTEMPORARY in Downtown LA's Little Tokyo district. Surveying the entire span of the legendary artist's career, the show is an absolutely mind-boggling affront to the senses and a nearly comprehensive catalog of Murakami's "greatest hits" from the past 10 years. We may not be able to show the installation views of the exhibit just yet (check back next Friday for the full update), but rest assured, everything you could hope to see—from 20-foot tall sculptures to massive multi-panel painted masterworks—is present and accounted for in MoCA's cavernous installation space. NYC///THE GREAT PUMPKIN STRIKES AGAIN…

October 19, 2007  |  Uncategorized  |  Comments Off

fpumpimg_7309.jpg

The Halloween season officially kicked off in the East Village last weekend when ERIK FOSS' FUSE GALLERY held its annual "Pumpkin Carving Bizarre" last Sunday where the freaks of the industry turned out in droves to put their artistic (dis)abilities to work in disfiguring a patch full of fresh squash. After several unsuccessful attempts to summon the spirit of the Great Pumpkin, the crew kept things moving at the bar while Public Image Limited's MARTIN ATKINS got busy on the wheels of steel with the OG jams. COOL SHIT///HOUSE INDUSTRIES BRINGS SEXY BACK…

October 19, 2007  |  Uncategorized  |  Comments Off

higetimage-4.jpg

There's a lot of talk about "hot" fashion collabs these days, but influential design house and masters of typography HOUSE INDUSTRIES' crossover with legendary lingerie brand AGENT PROVOCATEUR is one of the few that actually lives up to the talk. To celebrate their beyond-bangin' new collab, which included the upcoming Supertouch bloggers ANDY CRUZ and the House crew redesigning the brand's classic logo and overall look, the boys have put together this very special (shall we say, "heart-shaped"?) book chronicling the project's evolution with LOTS of revealing photos (and we're not talking about drawing fonts, here).
