Señor Suerte in the flesh...

Our boy CHAZ BOJORQUEZ is the absolute style king of OG EastLos cholo imagery and is the man that started it all. Without him there would be no Shawn Stüssy, Mr Cartoon, or Usugrow, to name a few. We think this inking of his most famous character, "Señor Suerte (Mr Lucky)" is a fitting tribute...

The attack of Dave Choe's little green men...

Our friends at GIANT ROBOT celebrated their 50th issue last weekend with a special biennale art exhibit curated by GR honcho ERIC NAKAMURA at LA's JAPANESE AMERICAN NATIONAL MUSEUM (conveniently located next door to MoCA's ginormous Takashi Murakami exhibit). Fans turned out in droves to catch sight of original works by DAVID CHOE, SEONNA HONG, SOUTHER SALAZAR, GARY BASEMAN, APAK, SASHIE MASAKATSU, SAELEE OH, ADRIAN TOMINE, EISHI TAKAOKA, and PRYOR PRACZUKOWSKI, and the rare vision of Mr Nakamura wearing a suit and tie. Luckily, our man DARREN "DR" ROMANELLI was on hand, tie in place, to snap the action. HAVE A LOOK: Read More

UK-based arachnophobes are best advised to steer well clear of the Tate Modern for the next two months while LOUISE BOURGEOIS' massive 30-foot-tall bronze spider looms large over the museum's entrance like a real-life Shelob. Installed in honor of the Tate's current retrospective show (featuring over 200 original pieces) cataloguing the 96-year-old French sculptor's diverse career, the incredible work, titled "Maman," originally debuted at the museum in 1999 in the grand Turbine Hall where DORIS SALCEDO’s massive crack now dominates the cavernous space. LONDON///FASHIOINISTA///DR ROMANELLI x ANDREW BRANDOU x MAHARISHI…

LA based artists and cultural "remixers" ANDREW BRANDOU and DARREN "DR" ROMANELLI have just announced their upcoming "Surgical Strike" collaboration of clothing and paintings set to be unveiled at London style house MAHARISHI on November 22nd. Working together in a military theme, the pair has each created a passionate body of work meditating on the culture of war from uniquely different angles. Inspired by his love of vintage military garments, Romanelli has taken a wide range of iconic uniform pieces from several countries and reimagined them as high-end luxury apparel far removed from their original utilitarian purposes. Meanwhile, painter Andrew Brandou has created a new series of works reinvisioning the world of legendary wildlife artist John James Audobon as populated by a new breed of fashion-conscious and heavily armed animals. We've seen a lot of crazy shit go to market on the streetwear front in the past few years, but this week's revelation that Japanese fashion brand W)TAPS has teamed up with OG German bootmaker DR MARTENS to release a pair of collaborative kicks featuring classic white power skinhead laces, we knew we'd broken some new ground in the WTF??? category. Hopefully Japanese fashionistas know better than to wear these on their scouting trips to the Rose Bowl swap meet...

THE LONDONIST is reporting that these photos it posted in recent days are of none other than the art world's most wanted man himself, BANKSY, live in action painting his most recent creation on a wall in Bethnal Green in East London last week. Is it our boy, or just a hapless helper? Only time (and snitches) will tell...

LONDON///DOING CRACK AT THE TATE MODERN…

November 4, 2007  |  Uncategorized  |  Comments Off

tatecrackfg18c3ed.jpg

A lot of strange art has passed through the walls of the UK's high temple of contemporary vision, the TATE MODERN, but Colombian artist DORIS SALCEDO's newest installation, a 548 foot long crack in the gallery's main entrance hall titled "Shibboleth" raises the bar. Created by opening the concrete floor and inserting the cast texture of a rock wall from her native Colombia, the giant fissure begins as a hairline crack and widens to a span of several inches as it snakes through the grand lobby of the former industrial space. At a depth of three feet at its widest point, the crack, which is a permanent addition to the musuem, has already claimed a few casualties as several people have tripped and fallen into the gash, prompting the museum to post warning signs and extra security personnel to warn visitors of the imminent danger of conceptual art. According to the artist, the piece is intended to symbolize racial division and a gap in equality among nations. HAVE A LOOK: Read More
