OK, so now we know for sure that IKE TURNER died from smoking rocks in his suburban San Diego crib on December 12th, but let’s not forget that the most notorious man in rock ‘n’ roll literally invented the genre single-handedly in 1951 when he penned and recorded “Rocket 88” at Sam Phillips’ Sun Studios, which has since been universally hailed as the very first true rock ‘n’ roll song ever created. We all know where the story goes from here, but along the way, his then-futuristic guitar style (always channeled through a Stratocaster) influenced everyone from Little Richard, to Elvis, to Ernie Isley, to Jimi Hendrix, to Keith Richards, none of whom would be the guitar players they were without first hearing Ike Turner and The Kings of Rhythm.
