Serra in full effect...

The identical twin art duo of IVORY & SHELTER SERRA may not exactly be a household name yet, but given their incredible work ethic and combined vision it might not be long before their names are mentioned alongside their slightly more famous uncle, minimalist sculptor and American art world royalty, Richard Serra (their father is the famed lawyer Tony Serra). Sidestepping the predictable artist-friendly landing pads of the East Village or Brooklyn, the brothers Serra have long called Harlem their home while maintaining a densely-packed workspace in Times Square crammed floor to ceiling with an impressive array of the pair's conceptually-heavy works in progress which include paintings, photography, collage, mixed media assemblages, sculptures, and small prototypes for upcoming large-scale sculptural installations. At a time when many young artists have put a premium on branding their work with a trademark look or set of recurring characters, the Serras revel in diversity, flitting from medium to medium with ease and tackling a dauntingly wide range of subject matter and imagery along the way. Our man on the scene, Fuse Gallery owner ERIK FOSS, dropped in on the pair last nite for a peek at what's to come at their Fall '08 gallery show, and pick up a copy of Ivory's new book, "The Serra Effect" featuring street-level photos of skaters, rappers, and an array of downtown art stars.
