One of the most amazing aspects of SWOON’s artwork is the power it has to completely envelop a space, transforming walls and ceilings into detailed scenes from the master’s vivid urban imagination with solemn linocut characters serving as mute orators of her dark fantasy scenes. Ok, that sounds a hell of a lot like really bad artspeak, or even worse, “creative writing,” but Swoon’s artwork just hits us like that. In her latest solo show “Drown Your Boats” that opened at MARSEA GOLDBERG’s West Hollywood artspot NEW IMAGE ART GALLERY this weekend little Swoonifer, inspired by the dark writings of Angela Carter’s “Burning Your Boats,” wove a stunning visual narrative throughout the narrow corridor that is this streetwise energy center on Santa Monica Boulevard that will form the core of her highly anticipated large-scale installation at Deitch Projects in NYC this Fall.
