The boomin system. Sorry, no reggaeton allowed...

Even if identical twin brothers Otavio and Augusto Pandolfo—otherwise known as the Brasilian art duo OS GEMEOS (“the twins")—threw a new art show every month, we still wouldn't get tired of taking in their amazing fantasy slumscapes. This time, the Brothers P have landed in Madrid at PILAR PARRA & ROMERO GALLERY where they launched their new solo show, "Sonhei Que Tinha Sonhado" ("I dreamed that I had dreamed") a full-scale multimedia installation of makeshift building facades and fantastic soundscapes last week. What's perhaps even more impressive than the sheer consistency of the brother's art is their daunting drive which pushes them to create art on nearly anything they can get their hands on at a superhuman rate. Simply put, few people in the art world are operating at this level, take notes, people. HAVE A LOOK: Read More

HOLLYWOODLAND///SWOON ROCKS THE BOAT AT NEW IMAGE ART…

Swoonifer in the moment...

One of the most amazing aspects of SWOON's artwork is the power it has to completely envelop a space, transforming walls and ceilings into detailed scenes from the master’s vivid urban imagination with solemn linocut characters serving as mute orators of her dark fantasy scenes. Ok, that sounds a hell of a lot like really bad artspeak, or even worse, "creative writing," but Swoon's artwork just hits us like that. In her latest solo show "Drown Your Boats" that opened at MARSEA GOLDBERG's West Hollywood artspot NEW IMAGE ART GALLERY this weekend little Swoonifer, inspired by the dark writings of Angela Carter's "Burning Your Boats," wove a stunning visual narrative throughout the narrow corridor that is this streetwise energy center on Santa Monica Boulevard that will form the core of her highly anticipated large-scale installation at Deitch Projects in NYC this Fall. PALM SPRINGS///GLENN BARR’S SCHOOL OF ABSTRACT THOUGHT…

"Network" by Glenn Barr...

In the art world there's "Art," and there's "art that goes with the couch." As proud couch owners, we must admit that sometimes we do like it when the art doesn't hurt our brains or clash with the furniture. Detroit's favorite son and connoisseur of all things retro and cool, GLENN BARR, is a man who understands the nuances of a good bit of atomic AbEx and his new smartly-curated group show of lovely amorphisms called "The Abstraction Distraction" at MMODERN GALLERY in Palm Springs turned out first rate easy eye candy by the likes of TIM BISKUP, CHRIS RECCARDI, LYNNE NAYLOR, JEREMIAH KETNER, JOHN BELL, GARY TAXALI, and more this weekend. A background artist from the early days of "Ren & Stimpy," Barr had a heavy hand in revitalizing the decorative abstraction of the 1950 & 60s and much of it is on hand here from fellow R&S alumni Biskup, Naylor, and Reccardi. Sonic cover art by (clockwise from upper left): Gerhard Richter, Mike Kelley, Raymond Pettibon, and Richard Prince...

According to NY MAGAZINE's Fiona Byrne , SONIC YOUTH founder THURSTON MOORE has announced plans to create a retrospective museum art show incorporating work from all the band's contributing artists over the years including Mike Kelley, Raymond Pettibon, Chris Wool, Richard Prince, and Gerhard Richter, to name a few. The as-yet unnamed show will travel the world over the course of several years, beginning in the French city of Saint-Nazaire in June of this year with a potential stop at the Whitney Museum in NYC being considered:

"We're putting together this museum show that's utilizing all the artists that we've worked with on different covers and concepts, and that's going to happen for two or three years," said Moore. "It's going to happen in young museums, there's one outside of Paris, there's one in Malmö, Sweden," he added. "It's going to be a lot of artwork by a lot of artists that we've worked with through the years, people like Chris Wool, Dan Graham, Vito Acconci.”

Upping the ante is Moore's claim that Sonic Youth will perform at each opening of the art tour, lest any viewer forget that it's called "rock art" for a reason...

ART CRIMES///MISSING $8 MIL BASQUIAT MASTERPIECE RECOVERED IN NYC…

Basquiat's 1982 masterpiece, "Hannibal"...

An $8 million painting by JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT has been located in an Upper East Side Manhattan warehouse after apparently being smuggled out of Brazil, federal prosecutors said. Prosecutors filed papers Wednesday seeking to seize the 1982 painting, called "Hannibal," in an effort to help Brazilian authorities claim it.

Its last known owner was Edemar Cid Ferreira, the former owner of Banco Santos and one of Brazil's largest art collectors. The bank went bankrupt in September 2005, leaving behind debts of over $1 billion. Ferreira was convicted in Brazil on charges including money laundering and bank fraud. He was ordered to begin serving a 21-year sentence in December 2006, but was released while his appeal winds through the courts.

A Brazilian court ordered the seizure of $20 million to $30 million worth of art, saying Ferreira and his relatives and associates had bought the works with proceeds of illegal schemes, according to U.S. prosecutors. But "Hannibal" was missing. Until now...

"Smiling faces tell lies..."

We haven’t been able to get this incredible sculptural series by 44-year-old Swiss conceptual installation artist UGO RONDINONE out of our heads since we caught sight of it at MATTHEW MARKS GALLERY in NYC at the end of last year. Created originally in clay and cast in aluminum, the massive sculptures are part of a run of mask effigies that he calls the “Moonrise” series and we wish we owned one. HAVE A LOOK: Read More

Like mother, like son. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree...

A month in the life of STUNTBOY (aka: Erik Foss) is like a year in the life of a normal human, and that's not necessarily a good thing. Between prowling art shows, running his gallery Fuse, and bar Lit, and generally dodging a lot of naked flesh, our boy seems to always have his hands full.
