RVCA artist Barry McGee with Cinelli honcho Antonio Colombo...

SoCal art & lifestyle clothing company RVCA in conjunction with renowned cycling company CINELLI have announced a collaborative cycling art project, "Pressure." Featuring an array of Cinelli bikes built and designed by such modern artists as Barry McGee, Ashley Macomber, Clare Rojas, C.R. Stecyk III, Dan Murphy, DMOTE, Jesse Geller, Josh Lazcano, KAWS, Madsaki, Phil Frost, PM Tenore and Stephen Powers, the partnership has been undertaken to pay tribute to both companies' passion for design and excellence in their respective fields and attests to the undeniable link between underground art and track bike culture that has solidified in recent years. The show will debut at RVCA's flagship store in San Francisco on Thursday, June 19th and will be followed by a second September showing in Austin, Texas at cycling legend LANCE ARMSTRONG's new bike shop, MELLOW JOHNNY'S (so named for Armstrong's cycling nickname derived from the French term "maillot jaune," meaning yellow jersey), with more future tour dates to be announced. To commemorate the show an array of limited-edition merchandise will be produced including RVCA T-shirts, a hardcover book, and, most notably, a special BARRY McGEE-designed Cinelli bike. Limited to 50 pieces worldwide and available in three frame sizes (54, 56 or 58), the cycle will be available as 25 complete bikes and 25 frame-only kits with pricetags of $3,700.00 and $2,100.00 respectively, and will be available for sale only through RVCA and Mellow Johnny's. Keep your eyes peeled for more updates to come, in the meantime, HAVE A LOOK: Read More

PDX///THE WEIRD WORLD OF ERIC WHITE AT QUALITY PICTURES…

Detail of E White's monstrous masterpiece...

Portland got a rare display of raw painting prowess when ERIC WHITE's eponymous show of new work debuted at QUALITY PICTURES gallery this weekend. Showcasing an impressive array of masterfully rendered new oil paintings, the shock and awe moment of the sold-out show was reserved for the massive centerpiece of the show, a huge new painting comprised of dozens of smaller paintings rendered as if they were actual framed pieces of art hung against a wall covered with intricate floral wallpaper. Needless to say, the town's art cognoscenti descended upon the show in full force, making Mr White feel like the belle of the ball, if only for one nite. HAVE A LOOK: Read More

NYC///SIGN O THE TIMES///CBGBs BECOMES JOHN VARVATOS BOUTIQUE…

Back in black...

Yeah, the Old New York has been dead and gone for a while now, but this week's opening of the new JOHN VARVATOS boutique on the site of the former location of CBGB’s was definitely one of the last nails in the coffin. Don't get us wrong, we love Varvatos (just look what he's done for Converse in the last few years) and the rock couture brand's fit is a total natural for the space, but rolling down Bowery and seeing the modern architecture of the new New Museum building and the home of CB’s as a high end boutique within blocks of each other just makes us realize that the street that literally gave birth to the term "skid row" and was the home of American Punk Rock in its earliest days will be an outdoor street mall within 10 years. Said Varvatos of the venture: ""We're not trying to reinvent CBGB's, we're just trying to respect the past and let people have an opportunity to enjoy what was there. It sounds kind of hokey, but the walls kind of talk in that place." Varvatos' preservation of any and all original details still left in the space is a nice touch and yeah, punk really is dead. We'll definitely feel much worse when CBGB's reopens in Las Vegas next year with all the venue's original fixtures intact, including the original stage. HAVE A LOOK: Read More

Our resident rock legend and roving gearhead BILLY F GIBBONS, dat ZZ Boy, checks in from the recording studio in H-Town with a glimpse of the iller-than-ill "FrankenFord," a truck/semi with mid-engine Cadillac motor, airbag suspension, sick paint/rust, and mojo to spare. HAVE A LOOK: Read More

Barry McGee with daughter Asha and Clare Rojas on opening nite...

It's not often that the landlocked SoCal armpit that is Riverside sees a show by the likes of BARRY McGEE and CLARE ROJAS but they sure got a hell of a good one in the duo's joint exhibition, "The Big Sad," which opened at the progressive RIVERSIDE ART MUSEUM on March 30th. Featuring an impressive array of mostly new work by each artist and a live musical performance by the elusive folkie, Peggy Honeywell (aka: Clare Rojas), the exhibition was a much-needed dose of culture that should hold the town over for another year. Here at Supertouch we try to leave the gossip column alone but news that Italian porn star CICCIOLINA, the former muse & wife of Pop Artist and onetime Wall Street commodities broker JEFF KOONS is currently suing her ex-husband for $2.3 million, claiming the artist hasn’t paid child support for their son Ludwig, in over nine years. Cicciolina, a former member of Italy's parliament whose porno nickname loosely means the “fleshy one” will perhaps be best remembered as the subject of one of Koons’ most explicit series of sculptural work depicting the then-married couple in the act. One of the world’s wealthiest artists, Koons sold his Read More

NYC///TAKUYA SAKAMOTO’S NEW YORK BIKE DREAMS…

Freak flag flying high...

Celebrating urban cycling culture in its rawest form, NYC's MEMES GALLERY unveiled "New York Bike Dreams," an impressive exhibition of the urban photography of TAKUYA SAKAMOTO on March 27th to an absolutely packed house of fixie fanatics. Born and raised in the urban Japanese city of Yokohama before relocating to NYC where he became a bike messenger and diehard cyclist, Sakamoto has always carried a camera in his messenger bag, capturing rare nuggets of the urban cycling experience at street level as he rode. From the event's monster turnout it's obvious that the track bike scene is more alive & well than ever, a fact that will likely be more than obvious on the city’s dirty downtown streets this summer. NYC///STUNTBOY///JEAN-PIERRE ARBOLEDA AT FUSE GALLERY…

April 8, 2008  |  Uncategorized  |  Comments Off

fuse-jpa2.jpg

Breaking out of the incestuous downtown art scene, our man ERIK FOSS has taken his East Village art hotspot FUSE GALLERY on a decidedly unexpected turn with a show of new work by the unknown Ecuadorian artist JEAN-PIERRE ARBOLEDA. Working mainly in ballpoint pen and watercolor on paper, Arboleda's technique and rendering ability is formidable lending incredible detail to his self-described scenes of animalia en regalia. Says the artist of his intricate tableauxs: "Devoid of rational thought, these brutes frantically and viciously struggle for sex and territory. Smaller animals harness larger ones, using them as vehicles to conquer one another." In stark graphic contrast is the gallery's downstairs VIP party room now playing host to an installation by renegade LA-based billboard hijacker, SKULLPHONE. HAVE A LOOK: Read More
