NYC///SHEPARD FAIREY x JEFF KOONS & GEORGE ORWELL…

The art world's power couple: Jeff Koons & Shepard Fairey...

In NYC as a featured speaker at the media symposium announcing the launch of GOOGLE's new iGoogle artist themes last week, Supertouch's own SHEPARD FAIREY shared the stage with none other than mega artstar JEFF KOONS. In case you've been living under a rock, Google's new themes for personalizing the interactive iGoogle page include imagery and gadgets by Lance Armstrong, Shepard Fairey, Hysteric Glamour's Nobu Kitamura, A Bathing Ape's Nigo, Jeff Koons, The Beastie Boys, and the Rolling Stone's Ronnie Wood to name a few. In other SHEPARD FAIREY news, it seems our boy wasn't content tackling the realms of popular culture and politiks with his trademark neo-constructivist artwork and has moved on to the canon of modern literature by redesigning the covers of author GEORGE ORWELL's legendary novels of doom and paranoia, "1984," and "Animal Farm." Damn, kids are spoiled these days...

pet_sounds_ii.jpg

One of our favorite artists from across the pond JAMES JARVIS has taken matters into his own hands and established a personal online art gallery featuring a selection of 50 original drawings with prices intended to inspire rather than shock. Ranging from around $150—$1,000 USD, the black & white images depict the English cartoonist & Amos Toys impresario's trademark characters in an wide range of detail and corresponding pricepoints that will satisfy even the his most diehard fans. His two Beach Boys "Pet Sounds" drawings originally created for Japanese magazine Relax are veritable steals at $1K a pop. In other Jarvis news, his forthcoming King Ken Mickey Mouse T-shirt will be available soon on the Amos website. DON'T SLEEP...

SOUND + VISION///TRENT REZNOR RELEASES SECOND FREE NINE INCH NAILS ALBUM — BUT IT’S GOOD THIS TIME!….

May 6, 2008  |  Art & Commerce, Cool Shit, Music, News, Sound + Vision  |  Comments Off

splash.jpg

That's right, as promised, NINE INCH NAILS frontman TRENT REZNOR has released the next NIN record "The Slip" as another free download available with no strings HERE. Unlike the band's recent free release, "Ghosts I—IV," however, this one doesn’t suck. Where "Ghosts" sounded like an odds 'n' sods collection of rejected atmospheric soundtrack bits, "The Slip" is a banger of a rock record in the recognizable NIN style we've all come to know and love. Yeah, there's a few throwaway instrumentals in there but it's nothing a delete key won't handle. In the words of Mr Reznor:

"'The Slip' is licensed under a creative commons attribution non-commercial share alike license. We encourage you to: remix it, share it with your friends, post it on your blog, play it on your podcast, give it to strangers, etc."

Also, unlike "Ghosts" which had allowed users to voluntarily pay for the download in whatever charitable denomination they deemed appropriate or purchase a limited-edition hard copy of the record with additional tracks, this album is simply free, and is available for download in a variety of audio formats including the superior Lossless and Wave files. Maybe Trent felt so guilty about making over a million bucks on a crappy album he felt the need to give away a good one for free. If so, that makes us feel better after wasting $5 bucks on the last one. GET IT NOW...

LONDON///STREET LIFE///FIRST LOOK AT BANKSY IN THE CANS FESTIVAL…

Banksy's very legal contribution to the Cans Festival...

In case you've been living under a rock, London is playing host to the CANS FESTIVAL this weekend, a huge show of stencil art with over 40 international street & graffiti artists participating, including movement figurehead and onetime rebel BANKSY, who masterminded the entire affair. These photos represent the first look at his work in the show. Located in an unused Eurostar terminal at Waterloo on the capital's South Bank, the very legal festival intends to showcase one of London's most popular tourist attractions in a safe, controlled setting. We're not exactly sure why it's called the "Cans Festival" instead of the more obvious "Stencil Festival," but we are surprised Sir Banksy himself is taking center stage in the show. The gangster move would have certainly been for Banksy to shun participation in the festival while dropping an illegal bomb of massive proportions elsewhere in the city as a movement-leading show of force. Who knows, it's a long holiday weekend in Fogtown, perhaps our man's got something up his sleeve yet. Meantime, here's what Banksy had to say about organizing the show: "Graffiti doesn't always spoil buildings, in fact it's the only way to improve a lot of them. In a few hours with a couple of hundred cans of paint, I'm hoping we can transform a dark, dirty, neglected hellhole into an oasis of beautiful art. I've always felt anyone with a paint can should have as much say in how our cities look as architects and ad men, so getting to cover an entire street with graffiti is a dream come true, or as some people might call it, a complete and utter nightmare." The show is being sponsored & organized by PICTURES ON WALLS, an East End printmaker that produces limited-edition screenprints by Banksy and Faile, among others. Tonite marks the VIP first-look debut of the show with A-listers like Kevin Spacey strolling through the tunnel, cocktails in hand, admiring the Street Art in spacious privacy before the sweaty masses are admitted on Saturday with an expected 75,000+ fans expected to descend on the show. Stay tuned for more updates throughout the weekend...

NYC///STREET LIFE///THE KEITH HARING MEMORIAL MURAL…

There's something just right about this combination...

To commemorate what would have been legendary Street/Pop artist KEITH HARING's 50th birthday this Sunday, May 4th, DEITCH PROJECTS, in collaboration with THE KEITH HARING FOUNDATION, have recreated the legendary mural painted by the late artist in the summer of 1982 on Houston Street at Bowery in what was then the center of the downtown art & gallery scene. Faithfully replicated by GOTHAM SCENIC from TSENG KWONG CHI's extensive archival photo documentation of the original piece, the mural has been repainted in the exact spot on the exact wall where it first appeared over 25 years ago. To ensure color-matching accuracy, original samples were procured by scraping away layers of paint on the wall until pieces of the original image were revealed.  The mural is set to be "officially unveiled" this Sunday with a formal dedication ceremony but it's already up for all to see. Space for the memorial was donated by real estate developer Tony Goldman, who owns the wall and the stunningly dayglo mural will remain on display until December 21st. Streetwise New Yorkers will remember this spot as the corner where a revolving cast of graffiti artists have left their mark for decades, and, most recently, where downtown graff gargoyle NECK FACE's most prominent tag has remained unmolested by haters for the past several years...

UFC's Dana White, OG Joan Jett, and Don Everlast...

UFC impresario DANA WHITE threw an exclusive little party for 30 lucky heads (including the always-banging MANDY MOORE & the ever-dangerous CHUCK "THE ICEMAN" LIDDELL) at Hollywood's VIPER ROOM on Wednesday where none other than legendary Runaway JOAN JETT rocked the house like she was 21 and just off the bus from nowheresville, USA. Of course, our man on the scene and official UFC correspondent EVERLAST, aka: Mr White, aka: Whitey Ford, was in the mix and popped a few flix. HAVE A LOOK:
