You've been warned...

It's been a painfully slow year in streetwear but the event of the summer kicks off this Friday in Hollywood when NEIGHBORHOOD, STUSSY, and NIKE unveil their "Boneyards" collaboration at the 144 LaBrea installation space. Unabashedly celebrating OG Southland beach and skate culture, the Boneyards project brings together a like-minded group of skaters and artists including JUAN PUENTE, JEREMY CARNAHAN, JOHN HALL, JACK RUDY, JESUS "CHUEY" QUINTANAR, ERIC DRESSEN, MISTER CARTOON, ROB ABEYTA, and ESTEVAN ORIOL to create a hard-edged clothing collection and sneaker collab that real SoCal skate rats have been dreaming of. Event space is extremely limited, RSVP now (see below) if you're even dreaming of showing your ugly mug at the spot. Don't sleep... HAVE A LOOK: Read More

AMSTERDAM///OPENINGS///DOZE GREEN & FEFÊ TALAVERA'S "OMEGA BRIDGE"…

Dutchies who took a break in their self-medicating long enough to hit the opening of DOZE GREEN & FEFÊ TALAVERA's epic "Omega Bridge" art show at K-SPACE GALLERY in Amsterdam last week got a major dose of incredible new collaborative artwork by the visionary pair. Showing and working together for the first time, American painter Doze's fluid figurative linework melded perfectly with 27-year-old Brasilian painter and street artist Talavera's angular tribal style to produce an array of inspired works on paper, scratchboard, and a giant mural that was the exhibition's centerpiece. Needless to say, the stoney crowd was in the proper headspace to truly appreciate the work's metaphysical philosophies and spent their Euros freely. HAVE A LOOK: Read More

LONDON CALLING///BILLBOARD LIBERATION///ON THE WALL WITH JAMES CAUTY…

Katie shills for Jimmie...

In the street art riddled streets of London Lichtenstein-ian AgitPop artist JAMES CAUTY knows to get a little attention you have to pull out the big guns. In other words, Kate Moss. Such was the case when the young artist liberated a few East End billboards in the name of art, er, self-promotion (there is a website listed on there after all). Nicely done. Now that Kate's advert campaigns are on the wane and retirement is looming large on the horizon these bombs may be the only daily doses of her we have in the near future. HAVE A LOOK: Read More

SOUND & VISION///PRODUCT TOSS///THE PHONOFONE iPOD SPEAKER CHANGES SHITE SOUND INTO ART…

The sound of the future. Two speakers are officially deader than an Ed Hardy T-shirt...

Yeah, MP3s and their bastard half-brother & sister formats sound like shite compared to the full stereo image vinyl provides, but with the new stunningly beautiful PHONOFONE iPOD SPEAKER (that's right, "speaker" as in one) at least no one will be paying attention to the actual sound coming out of the speaker. Created individually by hand in Toronto by innovative concept lab SCIENCE AND SONS, each signed and numbered miniature gramophone amplifies iPod sound without external power or batteries by exploiting the virtues of horn acoustics to boost the audio output of standard earphones to up to 55 decibels (roughly the maximum volume of laptop speakers). Crazy as it may sound, upon connecting active earphones to the Phonofone base their trebly buzzing is instantly and profoundly transformed into a warm, rich sound that totally eclipses the low-fi source file. Impossible as it may seem this tiny porcelain unit sounds nearly as loud and rich as a premium iPod dock and only after playing with this little beauty for the better part of an hour during which we fed it a wide variety of input from the Bad Brains to Debussy did we believe it for ourselves. At $850 USD this little beauty is a connoisseur's plaything, but the looks on the stunned faces of your audiophile buddies at your next party will make it worth every cent. Until it shatters on the floor after said drunk audiophile buddy bumps into it, that is. HAVE A LOOK: Read More

SF///JUST OPENED///SYLVIA JI’S UNDEAD BEAUTY PAGEANT AT WHITE WALLS GALLERY…

Necromantic jail bait never looked better...

One of our favorite young decorative/figurative painters SYLVIA JI has just debuted another collection of her iconic undead beauty queens at San Francisco hotspot gallery WHITE WALLS with portraits of enough hot zombie babes to raise a graveyard of dead sailors. The 26-year-old fogtown native has been on a hot streak the past few years steadily growing a large fan base by showing consistently high-quality work in key galleries coast-to-coast and stirring the loins of a nation of necromantic admirers in the process. Of course, if we had a few extra hundred grand lying around we'd start a strip club/art gallery in Vegas populated with Sylvia’s portraits and a slew of living babes outfitted in Ms. Ji's trademark dia de los muertos makeup and not much else. Sylvia, if you somehow manage to make that vision a reality, we want 10% and our own private champagne room. HAVE A LOOK: Read More

LUXEMBOURG///LAST LOOK///INSA PROVES SEX SELLS AT EXTRABOLD GALLERY…

Sex sells, and we're buying...

Yeah, that skybar says Luxembourg, which is exactly where London-based street artist & legendary foot-fetishist INSA has been laying his latest artistic tracks for the past month with his show "Wants and Needs" at EXTRABOLD GALLERY. Says Insa of the new work: "My aim is to create beautiful objects of desire in order to explore the relationship between sex, commodity and art. I want to show how our need for products, material objects and even artworks themselves can be confused with our wants and sexual desire." Showcasing the artist's trademark sexy imagery in a wide array of work ranging from realistic paintings to heavily-decorated canvases and high-heels bearing the artist's sensuous linework, the painter once again proves that his imagery is at home in a gallery as in the streets of London. The whole thing comes crashing down on Saturday, June 14th, so consider this your last look. HAVE A LOOK: Read More

The look of love on a 100 degree day...

The best thing about being down in the street in NYC is sights like this incredible KANDY KOLORED LOVE VAN heating up the scene in SoHo like it was 1977. When was the last time you saw the robot from Queen's "News of the World" album romancing a naked hottie beside a magical waterfall or a real stained glass window on a moving vehicle? SWITZERLAND///ART BASEL 2008: THE RECAP…

Tom Sachs: locked and loaded...

Better known as the "Olympics of the art world," the mammoth art convention that is the real ART BASEL, as in Basel Switzerland, not Miami, was in full effect last week in the land of money and chocolate. Luckily, our international man of mystery MISTER G was on the spot to take in the debauchery and bring us a glimpse of some of the exhibition's greatest hits. Also on display at this year's Basel—now in its 38th year—was NIKE's aesthetic celebration of the checkered ball in the form of "ART/OF/FOOTBALL," a user generated content exhibition curated in conjunction with SHOWstudio as part of Basel's DESIGN/MIAMI fair.
