First Artist Shepard "Hussein" Fairey?...

First the presumptive next president has a street artist with an arrest record cranking out his campaign artwork, now a legion of BARACK OBAMA's most devoted supporters are adding his name into their own—sometimes legally—as an overt show of allegiance. The most common insertion is the inclusion of Obama's controversially Muslim middle name "Hussein," which has been a target of right wing attention since conservative radio host, Bill Cunningham, scornfully repeated Obama’s middle name three times while introducing John McCain at a campaign rally in February. A typical example of Obama's newfound extended family: “My name is such a vanilla, white-girl American name,” said Ashley "Hussein" Holmes of Indianapolis, who changed her name online “to show how little meaning ‘Hussein’ really has.” READ ON: Read More

LONDON///OPENINGS///INSA’S “DIRTY CASH” AT FLAWLESS GALLERY…

insa-dirty-cash-exhibition-2.jpg

“My aim is to create beautiful objects of desire in order to explore the relationship between sex, commodity and art. I want to show how our longing for products, material objects and even artworks themselves can be sexual, almost fetishistic.”

So went the telling manifesto of Supertouch buddy INSA’s exceptionally decadent and aptly-named “Dirty Cash” exhibition that opened on July 3rd at the FLAWLESS GALLERY in London. Presented by luxury cellphone purveyors—and makers of the world’s first million dollar cell—GOLDVISH (think new money Russian gangster wives) in conjunction with London’s ultra high-end diamond & platinum encrusted bling dealers, FLAWLESS & Co, Mr Insa—tongue planted firmly in cheek—took a giant step into the world of the ridiculous as the ultimate extension of his creative M.O. and the wildly escalating street art market with an exhibition of his typically glorious, well-oiled, & Bode-esque naked lady paintings. Known for his steady street work and regular shows at counterculture galleries worldwide, the artist is more the type to be turned away from these diamond retailers than embraced by them, making the show an even better get. Needless to say, the monied & curious turned out in droves, wallets in hands, disturbed, no doubt, to find that none of the artist’s paintings incorporated any real diamonds affixed to the canvases. Yue Minjun's "Mr Pink" gets shy...

As we mentioned previously, perennial ST homeboy KAWS teamed up with Chinese Pop Art god YUE MINJUN to create a special figure for the MUSEUM OF TOMORROW’s “fine art toy” show titled “Art For The Masses” that opened last week in Taipei. Featuring new sculpts displayed alongside original artworks by ZHOU TIEN HAI, LIU YE, JING YU, ZHOU CHUN YA, the show is the first to address the genre for a Chinese audience incorporating domestic modern artists. All figures have been produced in runs of 100 pieces for sale in complete sets only at the museum and are not being distributed domestically. And yes, they’re expensive. HAVE A LOOK: Read More

WTF FILES?!?///ART FREAKS///THE 2008 CONEY ISLAND MERMAID PARADE…

Unfortunately, no, this is not a new Butthole Surfers video...

When someone says the words "Mermaid Parade" one can't help but imagine a street full of hot, young, half-naked women in forgivably bad costumes. Unfortunately, such was not really the case at the costumed perp walk that was last month's 2008 CONEY ISLAND MERMAID PARADE which instead looked like the movie version of a Vice "Don't" column. Featuring a staggering array of art-damaged revelers in various states of creative undress, the annual event once again proved to be one of the best people watching processions of all time. Technically the country's largest art parade, the parade is actually an homage to Coney Island's long forgotten Mardi Gras that was staged religiously from 1903 to 1954 and invites a stunning array of like-minded exhibitionists to converge on the boardwalk to display their pound(s) of painted flesh. Pour yourself a drink, smear some Vaseline on your computer screen and HAVE A LOOK: Read More

Sao Paulo spirit on the street in the BK...

What? You thought "Too Far Too Close" at DEITCH PROJECTS was the only art show by Brasilian twins OS GEMEOS up in the NYC right now? Grinding away in the gallery for weeks before last weekend's opening, the bad boys of Sao Paulo still found time to bomb the walls of Brooklyn and leave a little street-level exhibit for the masses on the walls of the Power Brake Service shop on the corner of Clay and McGuinness in Greenpoint. They even took the time to glue fabulous pink sequins onto the shirt of one of thier characters. HAVE A LOOK: Read More

LONDON///ART & COMMERCE///U2’s BASQUIAT MASTERPIECE SOLD AT AUCTION…

July 3, 2008  |  Art & Commerce, London, News  |  Comments Off

Even this Basquiat masterpiece couldn't stand U2's music anymore...

It's an accepted truism that the best pieces by the deceased street art/Pop master JEAN–MICHEL BASQUIAT are all in the hands of knowing private collectors at this point where they're likely to stay for some time to come. That fact alone would normally be enough to make the early '80s masterpiece painting "Untitled (Pecho/Oreja), 1983" auctioned yesterday at Sotheby's for a healthy £5,000,000 ($9,962,699 USD) especially noteworthy—if it weren't coming from the private collection of U2, that is. Originally purchased by the Irish band at a posthumous Basquiat show at Robert Miller Gallery in New York in 1989 (Samo OD'd in 1988) for a mere fraction of its current value, the huge painting hung as a backdrop in their Dublin studio and was present at the recording of their albums beginning with "Achtung Baby" until the band mysteriously decided to part ways with it this month. Believed to be a self-portrait created by the then-22-year-old art star in his basement studio beneath Anina Nosei's gallery, the piece is a truly incredible painting by the late artist and a find of even rarer quality on the open market these days. Of course, it was picked up by an unnamed private European collector who obviously lives somewhere where money is still worth something. HAVE A LOOK: Read More

NYC///OPENINGS///OS GEMEOS’ “TOO FAR TOO CLOSE” AT DEITCH PROJECTS…

July 1, 2008  |  art, Feature, News, NYC, Openings, Os Gemeos  |  Comments Off

osgd-58.jpg The two-headed Brasilian art phenomenon that is OS GEMEOS (Portuguese for "The Twins") brought their fantastic art circus to NYC when their phenomenal show of new work "Too Far Too Close" opened at DEITCH PROJECTS as the art party of the summer on Saturday nite. In it, identical 24-year-old twin brothers GUSTAVO and OTAVIO PANDOLFO have created a sprawling cityscape within superstar downtown art dealer JEFFREY DEITCH's cavernous Wooster Street space. Mirroring their psychedelic storybook street paintings that cover the city walls of their native Sao Paulo...
