NEWS///MIAMI///HEAD OF ART BASEL PREDICTS DIRE YEAR FOR THE ART FAIR

December 4, 2008  |  art, Art & Commerce, Art Basel, Miami, News  |  Comments Off

The doormat at this year's Art Basel Miami seems errily appropriate...

With the seventh annual installment of the reliably trashy and hedonistic art extravaganza known as ART BASEL set to officially kick off tomorrow, the economic crisis at large is bound to be the event's show-stealer, inevitably drawing attention away from the naked late nite revelry and spending orgies of years past. Speaking to German news source SPIEGEL this week, MARC SPIEGLER, one of the fair's two heads predicted, "most galleries will probably not break any records this year." The report went on to detail the grim reality facing the fair's thousands of international dealers this year as art movers try to make numbers in a time of global economic uncertainty. HONG KONG///VINYL CULTURE///FIRST LOOK: MICHAEL LAU’S “CRAZY FORCE 1″ EXHIBITION

Hong Kong Sneaker and vinyl fetishists were on cloud nine last week when hoometown art hero MICHAEL LAU opened his "Crazy Force 1" art show at MICHAEL GALLERY. A collaborative project between the seminal toymaker's "Crazy Children" series and NIKE SPORTSWEAR's "1World" Air Force 1 program, the show featured a shoe box-like interior printed with Lau's "padded cell" print with artwork by Lau visible only through Swoosh-shaped cutouts in the wall. In the far corner of the room stood the artist's life-sized "Crazy Force" character solo in a corner. Of course no proper collab would be complete without to-die-for limited-edition product and Lau did not disappoint in offering fans a signature Nike Air Force 1 sneaker with an upper constructed of his quilted "padded cell" leather and a pocket-sized version of his "Crazy Force" character. Needless to say, supplies sold out in seconds and Lau's reputation as the king of the game remained undefeated. HAVE A LOOK: Read More

FILM///FIRST LOOK: ASTRO BOY THE MOVIE

A curiously shirted Astro Boy runs out to kick Speed Racer's ass...

2009 is gonna be a huge year for otaku Anime & Manga fans when the legendary ASTRO BOY finally hits the big screen in modern computer animated form in an eponymous feature based the highly successful Japanese franchise by OSAMU TEZUKA. Nicolas Cage's inclusion in the film as voice "talent" will surely be a low point but hopefully they don't mess this flick up completely. We need something to redeem last year's "Speed Racer" fiasco bad...

MIAMI///PHARRELL’S NEW TOY: KAWS’ GIANT WHITE CHUM

December 2, 2008  |  art, Design, KAWS, Miami, News, Pharrell  |  Comments Off

Just in time for this week's kickoff of ART BASEL 2009, Miami resident & baller extraordinaire PHARRELL has just taken delivery of a brand new 7' fiberglass KAWS "Chum" sculpture at his oceanfront pad. The only one of its kind in this color, the sculpture is part of the extremely limited-edition series kickstarted by the Brooklyn-based XX-eyed artist at his NYC show last month at the GERING & LOPEZ GALLERY where a hot pink version of the familiar Michelin Man awed fans. Look for a new colorway to debut at KAWS' upcoming show at LA's HONOR FRASER GALLERY in February '09...

WTF?!? FILES///WORLD RECORD 650 METER BASE JUMP IN DUBAI

December 2, 2008  |  News, Video, WTF???  |  Comments Off

It appears that as long as humans insist on constructing gigantic buildings, other, less smart humans will continue to climb and jump off them. Such was the case late last month when a Brit and a Frenchman (an unlikely alliance if ever there was one) managed to sneak to the top of the world's tallest building in (currently under construction), the BURJ DUBAI and jump off its top floor at 650 meters (2,132 feet). They lived, but honestly, we're not sure what the bigger risk was, jumping the building or going to jail in the United Arab Emirates...

Right now it really doesn't matter who you voted for this year or who the next guy up is, all that's important is that our current honorable leader GEORGE W. BUSH is looking at a month and change left as president of the free world. Last nite's talk with ABC anchor Charlie Gibson is being called W's "exit interview" and it was full of some epic quotes—"I think I was unprepared for war"—that will surely ring in our ears long after he's put out to pasture. In honor of Bush's imminent departure, we at Supertouch have assembled a small gallery of some of our favorite portraits of the prez to accompany the interview highlights:

On retirement: “I'm going to have a lot of time to think. My day is going to go from getting up early-early, and being at the Oval Office at 6:45 a.m., and having a lot to do when you get there, to waking up at 6:45 a.m., getting Momma the coffee—and kind of wandering around trying—‘What's next, boss?’”
