GREG “CRAOLA” SIMKINS “STOP HAUNTING ME” OPENING AT MERRY KARNOWSKY GALLERY, LA
Supertouch buddy Greg “Craola” Simkins opened his show of masterful new work, “Stop Haunting Me” at Merry Karnowsky Gallery in LA on Saturday night to a packed house of adoring fans. The capacity crowd (meticulously inspected by the LA fire marshall, no less) rightfully crammed every square foot of the cavernous gallery space to get a look at the master renderer’s highly anticipated new show of oil paintings that showcase the young painter at the height of his technical prowess. Like his technical & thematic mentors Todd Schorr, Mark Ryden, and Robert Williams, Simkins combines old master painting technique with hyper-realistic rendering chops to create fantastical scenarios of dense, challenging imagery that is the hallmark of what many (including this founding Juxtapoz editor) consider the “Juxtapoz” school of painting. Simkins is at the head of his class in this regard and one of the foremost talents of his generation in this school of painting, and one who is surely to only become more formidable with age. If you’re in the LA area before May 4th, consider this show an essential stop. Have a look:
