ARTIST PAUL McCARTHY SHITS ON CHINA IN WEST KOWLOON’S “INFLATION” SCULPTURE SHOW
Revered NYC-based hellraiser artist Paul McCarthy, who’s built a career on creating incredibly difficult “punk” fine art—with highlights including sculptures of chocolate butt plugs and George W Bush sodomizing pigs—has put his indelible stamp on China’s new West Kowloon Cultural District Sculpture Park in Hong Kong with a giant pile of human feces. The sculpture, which is inflatable and stands 15.5 meters tall, is appropriately titled “Complex Pile,” and is part of a group show called “Inflation.” The show sits on the grounds of what will become the M+ Museum by 2017, and includes several other giant scale inflatable sculpts depicting Stonehenge, a Pink Floyd-style broiled pig, a giant Agave, and a giant cockroach. While McCarthy never comments on the meaning of his artworks, we can only surmise that he’s deeply enjoying taking a shit on a country known for its human rights abuses and restriction of artistic expression on every level. The show runs through June 9th.
