MUST-SEE SHOW | YOSHITOMO NARA’S RETROSPECTIVE AT BLUM & POE, LA
For his seventh show with stalwart LA gallery Blum & Poe, Japanese art hero Yoshitomo Nara presents an eponymous retrospective of sorts, featuring 11 new large-scale paintings & 10 new bronze sculptures representing his current visual mode, and a massive survey of over 200 drawings made over the past three decades chronicling in detail his stylistic evolution throughout the years. The result is an exhibition of extraordinary depth and inspiration that will easily be one of the most important shows in LA this year. Despite the artist’s deceptively simplistic and cute subject matter, Nara’s work explores the complexity of childhood that escapes us as adults with a depth rarely seen in the art world and with a sensitivity of a grownup that’s never lost touch with his own adolescence.
