PUBLIC ART | TRACEY EMIN’S “I PROMISE TO LOVE YOU” AT THE COSMOPOLITAN HOTEL, LAS VEGAS
Powerhouse English artist Tracey Emin brought her recent "I Promise To Love You" series of neon sign artworks to Las Vegas this month when the Cosmopolitan Hotel began showing the images on all of their LED signage throughout the resort as part of its PAUSE public art project. Featuring bleedingly saccharine slogans that sound like quotes lifted from a tween girl's diary like (cue Justin Bieber soundtrack in background), "When I Hold You I Hold My Heart," "You Touch My Soul, and the absolutely hilarious "I Listen to the Ocean and All I Hear Is You," Emin's works which were largely derided by the fine art press when shown in a gallery setting play out here as a brilliantly absurdist installation set amongst the wanton greed and lust of Las Vegas. The irony seems to have been lost on the artist herself, though, as she explained her motivation for the show, saying "It's fantastic that the hotel wants to do this. It's not about selling things. It's about love." Even better was the accompanying quote from the hotel's CMO Lisa Marchese who testified, "It will be a moment of magic, and leave someone with a story to tell."
