FIRST LOOK | STEPHEN “ESPO” POWERS’ “TODAY IS ALREADY TOMORROW” OPENING AT TARGET GALLERY, TOKYO
Last week in Japan, street art legend, sign painter extraordinaire, and emergent fine artist Stephen “ESPO” Powers opened his latest show, “Today is Already Tomorrow” at Tokyo’s Target Gallery. Given his Japanese audience’s profound obsession with all things Americana, pop culture, and english language phrases (which are often appropriated wildly out-of-context), the show of Powers’ trademark wordplay paintings were a perfect match to his eager viewers who packed the tiny backstreet gallery—politely, of course—to get a closer work at Espo’s latest body of work loaded with visual and verbal puns & non-sequiturs like “Everything is Shit (Except You Love),” and “No More Excuses (Maybe),” alongside uplifting messages like “Let’s Adore and Endure Each Other.”
