OPENINGS | SAM FRIEDMAN’S “EASY” AT LIBRARY STREET COLLECTIVE, DETROIT
Much is made in the press these days about Detroit's current cultural renaissance, and at the center of that action is Matt Eaton's Library Street Collective gallery where Sam Friedman's gorgeous show of vivid new abstracts debuted last week. Titled Easy, the new body of work continues his current stylistic modality, featuring organic abstractions resembling floral and biological patterns in loud, beautiful psychedelic colors that bear the undeniable influence of traditional aboriginal painters, whether intended or not. The Brooklyn-based artist has been on a streak lately, creating what could easily be called his finest work to date and, with this stellar Detroit outing, signaling great things to come.
