ART + COMMERCE | DAMIEN HIRST’S GOLD MAMMOTH RAISES $15 MILLION FOR AIDS AT CANNES
AIDS charity amFAR's annual gala was held last nite in Cannes where Damien Hirst's gold mammoth sculpture, Gone But Not Forgotten was auctioned off to Ukrainian businessman Leonard Blavatnik to the tune of $15,000,000 USD by auctioneer hosts Sharon Stone & art world titan Simon de Pury. It crowned a triumphant night for the AIDS research charity, with the auction raising a record $38,000,000 USD, including a pair of Karl Lagerfeld's signature gloves, a Picasso sketch, and a $950,000 trip to space with Leonardo DiCaprio that was on the block. The gala, held at the Hotel du Cap, was attended by beautiful people and industry luminaries like Jessica Chastain, Leonardo Di Caprio, Rosario Dawson, Quentin Tarantino, Justin Bieber (who got to stay up late), and Harvey Weinstein, with Lil Wayne, Robin Thicke, and Lana Del Rey performing. When asked what he would do with the skeleton, winning bidder Blavatnik confessed, "I don't know yet. It was unexpected."
