Renowned for his prodigious output as a graffiti artist under the moniker REVOK for more than two decades, 38-year-old LA native Jason Williams has been quietly distinguishing himself in recent years with an accomplished and elegant body of abstract geometric assemblage paintings that draw heavy inspiration from the tradition of great color field painters like Frank Stella. A new body of these stunning works went on view last nite in downtown LA at Matt Eaton’s Detroit-based Library Street Collective in a local Arts District pop-up space that signals the gallery’s intent to put down permanent west coast roots in the near future.

The artist’s current stylistic direction began to evolve a few years back in Detroit where Williams had relocated following some brushes with the law in LA for illegal graffiti painting, a forced exile that turned out to be a creative blessing in disguise. There he experimented with developing his complex abstract compositions by cutting up, painting, and recombining old signage and pieces of reclaimed wood into stunning fine artworks that surprised his old fans while earning him a new following of well-heeled high-end collectors.

For his current eponymous show, Williams takes this previous stylistic direction to even greater depths with work that feels more evolved and refined, imbued with greater purpose of composition, subtlety, and nuance. “Leaving Detroit and returning to Los Angeles, it didn’t make sense to continue in my previous direction,” he explains.  “I felt I had accomplished what I wanted to with my studio practice in Detroit.”

While he adheres to a similar process in creating his most recent body of work, Williams’ new work is centered on the idea of singularity. “We as a civilization and species seem to be on the brink of a new era of evolution. The idea of our technology and biology merging into a new digital consciousness proposes new questions.”
