Bodies might have been concentrated at the Art Los Angeles Contemporary and decidedly more lowbrow LA Art Show fairs in the Southland over the weekend, but the most attention was on notorious old perv artist Paul McCarthy‘s giant inflatable Tree parked at the remote Paramount Ranch Art Fair. Easily the most entertaining of the LA art fairs, Paramount Ranch 3, as its formally known (though this year marked its final installment), occupies the old Paramount movie ranch in the mountains above Malibu where art installations live within the vintage western set structures in a setting that is the literal (and glorious) anthesis of the NY art world. The massive inflatable anal toy which made its debut in Paris in 2014 to much public consternation there—and ultimately, assault—found a much more receptive audience in the West, however, where art collectors, hipster art aficionados, and just plain hipsters reveled in its absurdist glory, posing for many a forced perspective photo with butts in the air towards the sculpture, turning Instagram into a celebration of anal.
