Karl Lagerfeld's spaceship has finally landed, and P-Funk is the house band...

As big companies struggle to find new ways to connect the dots between their brands and the art world, OG fashion giant CHANEL has boldly gone where few have been able to afford to go before and created their own incredible traveling UFO-like art museum dubbed the "CHANEL CONTEMPORARY ART CONTAINER" which has just touched down in Tokyo's Yoyogi Park near the hipster hub of the Harajuku subway station. And what does this incredible land-based flying object house, you might ask? Why an obligatory self-congratulating collection of original art pieces by 20 international artists including (among others) YOKO ONO, THE BLUE NOSES, DAVID LEVENTHAL, DANIEL BUREN, LEE BUL, NOBUYOSHI ARAKI, PIERRE et GILLES, and STEPHEN SHORE, of course, all paying homage to the couture house's signature product, the Chanel quilted purse. While we can think of fewer items less inspiring to build a traveling art exhibition around, we're more than impressed by architectural futurist ZAHA HADID's incredible modular spaceship-like structure that was commissioned by the company's chief creative director and resident Earthbound alien, KARL LAGERFELD. With stops scheduled in New York, London, Moscow, and Paris through 2010, there's a good chance a great deal of well-heeled aficionados will get their chance to prowl the pod's Kubrick-ian white corridors and possibly even be granted an audience with the mobile museum's resident MC, Hal. ROTTERDAM///A HUMAN NEST AT 13 STORIES…

Artist Benjamin Verdonck at home in his new skybox...

Belgian artist BENJAMIN VERDONCK has taken the usually verboten medium of performance art to new heights of greatness with his new NEST installation titled “The Great Swallow” in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Perched 50 meters above the city square on the side of the 13th floor of the Wenna Tower (aka: “The Pepperbox”), Verdonck’s windy new home is, according the artist, constructed of “the crowns of 23 silver birches, two straw bales, one bucket of spit, three bags of sand, twelve buckets of glue, and nineteen cans of polyurethane foam.” Residing in the perch since its construction a week ago, the artist has seen a lot of debris float down to his numerous fans at street level including feathers, a giant egg, and copious amounts of bird shit. No word yet on how long the installation will remain or what the artist’s final stunt will be, but we’re guessing it could quite easily include a caravan of ambulances. HAVE A LOOK: Read More

LONDON///STREET LIFE///FIRST LOOK AT BANKSY IN THE CANS FESTIVAL…

Banksy's very legal contribution to the Cans Festival...

In case you've been living under a rock, London is playing host to the CANS FESTIVAL this weekend, a huge show of stencil art with over 40 international street & graffiti artists participating, including movement figurehead and onetime rebel BANKSY, who masterminded the entire affair. These photos represent the first look at his work in the show. Located in an unused Eurostar terminal at Waterloo on the capital's South Bank, the very legal festival intends to showcase one of London's most popular tourist attractions in a safe, controlled setting. We're not exactly sure why it's called the "Cans Festival" instead of the more obvious "Stencil Festival," but we are surprised Sir Banksy himself is taking center stage in the show. The gangster move would have certainly been for Banksy to shun participation in the festival while dropping an illegal bomb of massive proportions elsewhere in the city as a movement-leading show of force. Who knows, it's a long holiday weekend in Fogtown, perhaps our man's got something up his sleeve yet. Meantime, here's what Banksy had to say about organizing the show: "Graffiti doesn't always spoil buildings, in fact it's the only way to improve a lot of them. In a few hours with a couple of hundred cans of paint, I'm hoping we can transform a dark, dirty, neglected hellhole into an oasis of beautiful art. I've always felt anyone with a paint can should have as much say in how our cities look as architects and ad men, so getting to cover an entire street with graffiti is a dream come true, or as some people might call it, a complete and utter nightmare." The show is being sponsored & organized by PICTURES ON WALLS, an East End printmaker that produces limited-edition screenprints by Banksy and Faile, among others. Tonite marks the VIP first-look debut of the show with A-listers like Kevin Spacey strolling through the tunnel, cocktails in hand, admiring the Street Art in spacious privacy before the sweaty masses are admitted on Saturday with an expected 75,000+ fans expected to descend on the show. Stay tuned for more updates throughout the weekend...

NYC///STREET LIFE///THE KEITH HARING MEMORIAL MURAL…

There's something just right about this combination...

To commemorate what would have been legendary Street/Pop artist KEITH HARING's 50th birthday this Sunday, May 4th, DEITCH PROJECTS, in collaboration with THE KEITH HARING FOUNDATION, have recreated the legendary mural painted by the late artist in the summer of 1982 on Houston Street at Bowery in what was then the center of the downtown art & gallery scene. Faithfully replicated by GOTHAM SCENIC from TSENG KWONG CHI's extensive archival photo documentation of the original piece, the mural has been repainted in the exact spot on the exact wall where it first appeared over 25 years ago. To ensure color-matching accuracy, original samples were procured by scraping away layers of paint on the wall until pieces of the original image were revealed.  The mural is set to be "officially unveiled" this Sunday with a formal dedication ceremony but it's already up for all to see. Space for the memorial was donated by real estate developer Tony Goldman, who owns the wall and the stunningly dayglo mural will remain on display until December 21st. Streetwise New Yorkers will remember this spot as the corner where a revolving cast of graffiti artists have left their mark for decades, and, most recently, where downtown graff gargoyle NECK FACE's most prominent tag has remained unmolested by haters for the past several years...

Roger Waters' Slick & Danny Boy-designed graffiti pig heads off to slaughter...

Checking in on the road home from COACHELLA, here's a quick look at the obligatory flying “Dark Side of the Pig" balloon painted by Supertouch buddies SLICK & DANNY BOY bearing slogans like "Don't Be Led to the Slaughter," "No Blood For Oil," and "Don't Build Walls," that floated through ROGER WATERS' moonlite Floyd set...

UPDATE: $10,000 REWARD FOR LOST PIG:
After being released during Waters' Coachella-closing set Sunday nite, it seems the pig du jour floated off into the horizon, never to be reclaimed. Now, Coachella festival organizer Bill Fold has offered a $10K reward for the graffiti'd oinker's return: "A pig got loose last night," said Fold, "We really like him and want him back.... It's a very emotional time for us." Anyone with information of the piggy's whereabouts or in possession of a convincing bootleg & a need for $10K can contact lostpig@coachella.com...

LONDON///AFTER THE GOLD RUSH…

July 4, 2007  |  art, Art Stunts, London, News  |  Comments Off

paulinsectgold1.jpg

In the ongoing category of "art stunts" comes PAUL INSECT's recent campaign of dumping gold bars in strategic locations around London in anticipation of his forthcoming solo show at the hotspot LAZARIDES GALLERY on July 20th titled "Bullion." This weekend saw the artist secretively dumping a stack of the gold bricks on Old Street near the tube station, each of which were signed by the artist and carried the caveat "if you have me, I was stolen." These days being an artist seems to require a marketing degree to boot. Banksy should start teaching a PhD course once he finally throws in the towel...

Banksy's newest alter-to-the-gods of poor digestion...

Mork art from BANKSY has appeared at this weekend's GLASTONBURY MUSIC FESTIVAL, namely this STONEHENGE replica made from stacked port-a-potties . Since being erected, the reveling, mud-caked masses have taken to adding their own graffiti and otherwise trashing the site in true euro-hippie fashion. Expect to see the portable toilets showing up on eBay this Monday...

NYC///FAILE’S MILLION DOLLAR BABY…

June 7, 2007  |  art, Art & Commerce, Art Stunts, Graffiti, Hype 2.0, News, NYC, Street Art  |  Comments Off

fimg_3394.jpg

The international (street??) art collective known as FAILE took a page from the Banksy playbook when they unveiled their latest show, "Nothing Lasts Forever" at a private reception in NYC Wednesday nite. Forgoing the traditional gallery setup, the group rented their own grimy warehouse space on the Lower East Side and quickly sold out more than 40 artworks ranging from $25—$35,000 on up, clearing well over a million in sales before the opening red carpet was even laid. In attendance were Lower Manhattan's hipster elite mingling with well-heeled art buyers looking to get in early on the next big thing (in this case, however, that was last year). Of course, the work was top notch and the collective's multimedia Pop collages were as beautiful and focused as ever. Supertouch's own Stuntboy (aka: Erik Foss) was on hand to capture the magic.
