Lance and Ed Ruscha talk art and Ed plans his next masterpiece based around Livestrong' new bionic clavicle...

There's only one superhuman whose life that headline could apply to in reference to the span of a mere two weeks. Of course, the freak of nature in question just happens to be Supertouch's own resident cycle killer LANCE ARMSTRONG. After debuting his new KAWS designed TREK MADONE in the legendary MILAN-SANREMO race on March 21st only to crash it and his now shattered collarbone in the Spanish classic VUELTA CASTILLA Y LEON race two days later, the seemingly indestructible hard charger is now the proud owner of a new clavicle implant that looks suspiciously like twelve drywall screws and a piece of old bender board. Of course, we gave up a career in professional sports medicine and surgery years ago so our frame of reference might be a bit outdated. Now on the mend and back on the bike in preparation of his scheduled runs in June's GIRO and the TOUR DE FRANCE in July, ol' Livestrong managed to log some bro time at the house in Austin last week with visiting LA art legend ED RUSCHA who was in town for a lecture at UT.  Currently hitting the mountains hard at altitude in Aspen, the man with nine lives is proving that the term unstoppable was in fact originally coined in reference to him. Keep an eye on ST for updates from the road, and a sneek peek at Lance's upcoming round of new artist-designed race bikes. HAVE A LOOK: Read More

TEJAS///SHEPARD FAIREY x LANCE ARMSTRONG x MELLOW JOHNNY’S IN AUSTIN

This year's installment of the legendary SOUTH x SOUTHWEST music festival in Austin, Texas again proved to be one of the last fleeting moments of relevancy in a modern music world gone post-apocalyptic. Aside from washed-up metal has-beens Metallica playing a gig in honor of their new signature Guitar Hero video game (if only Satan would rise up and strike them down now, lord), the dusty Texas town played host to a staggering array of ripping new talent proving there might still be hope for Hollywood—if not the big box chain record store—yet. On the scene to wheatpaste the town red, white, and black was Supertouch's own SHEPARD FAIREY who went big on the side of LANCE ARMSTRONG's personal bike shop, MELLOW JOHNNY'S immediately after touching down. He pretty much slammed the rest of the town too. HAVE A LOOK: Read More

NEWS///LANCE ARMSTRONG DISCUSSES THE “STAGES” ART SHOW WITH THE LA TIMES

LANCE ARMSTRONG IS A SHOW-STOPPER IN HOLLYWOOD
By Diane Pucin, LA Times, March 8, 2009

“Ben Stiller did the introductions and newly hot artist Shepard Fairey did a mural, but Lance Armstrong was the star Saturday night at the Ricardo Montalban Theater in Hollywood.

As part of his cycling comeback, Armstrong, the seven-time Tour de France winner, has made clear that he is riding not only to win more races but also to raise more money for his cancer charity, the Lance Armstrong Foundation.
Armstrong is flying Sunday to Europe in advance of the third race in his comeback journey, the Milan-San Remo Classic. But on Saturday, Armstrong rode 2.2 miles with about 700 recreational cyclists and then spoke to an enthusiastic audience of art and cycling lovers.

Fairey has gained recent attention for his creation of the Barack Obama "Hope" image, and there was a Fairey-created mural celebrating Armstrong's cycling comeback and cancer-fighting commitment painted on the side of the theater.

Stiller introduced Armstrong by making a joke about how when the two of them walk down the street, people stop to marvel at Armstrong's ability to inspire awe because of his cycling accomplishments after recovering from cancer, and then they stare at Stiller and say, "Thunder, man," because of Stiller's starring appearance in the less-than-esoteric movie comedy "Tropic Thunder."

More than 20 artists have created works that will be displayed beginning July 16 at the Emmanuel Perrotin Gallery in Paris and will be sold with the proceeds going to Armstrong's foundation. Besides Fairey, other notable artists participating in this fundraiser include Tom Sachs, Eric White, Marc Newson, Os Gemeos and Taryn Simon.” Click HERE to continue reading

Launching tonite at NIKE's MONTALBAN THEATER is news of the upcoming "Stages" art show that will debut in July at GALERIE EMMANUEL PERROTIN in Paris during LANCE ARMSTRONG's run in this year's TOUR DE FRANCE. An exhibition curated to reflect the personal art collecting tastes of Lance himself, the exhibition was developed by Nike to illustrate LIVESTRONG's expanded global outreach in the fight against cancer and as a means of engaging the creative community in the shared struggle. Launching on July 16th, the show will feature nearly thirty original artworks reflecting on some aspect of the cancer struggle by a diverse roster of emerging and established artists including ED RUSCHA, RAYMOND PETTIBON, KAWS, ROSSON CROW, JR, TARYN SIMON, CHRISTOPHER WOOL, JULES DE BALINCOURT, SHEPARD FAIREY, JOSE PARLA, AARON YOUNG, MARC NEWSON, KENNY SCHARF, OS GEMEOS, YOSHITOMO NARA, ERIC WHITE, and DZINE, to name just a few. To highlight the event, Lance will be riding a special series of "art bikes" in the Tour de France created in collaboration with TREK and designed by none other than modern art and design masters MARC NEWSON, TAKASHI MURAKAMI, and DAMIEN HIRST. To put a giant face on the campaign, SHEPARD FAIREY wrapped the side of the Montalban theater in his new artwork for Livestrong depicting Lance as the two-wheeled cancer fighting machine that he was born to be.
