SOUND + VISION///POP LIFE///RON EGNLISH’s “OBAMA SONG”…

August 14th, 2008

In a move that literally none of us could possibly anticipate, Supertouch’s own street saboteur & Popagandist, RON ENGLISH has written a musical homage to golden boy presidential hopeful BARACK OBAMA, and had it recorded by THE SUTCLIFFES, and just to up the ante, he’s filmed a video incorporating footage of his recent “Abraham Obama” street installation in Boston…

BOSTON///POPAGANDA///RON ENGLISH’S “ABRAHAM OBAMA” CONTROVERSY…

Looks like being considered a Muslim is the least of Barack’s 99 problems now…

It seems that Supertouch’s own RON ENGLISH can’t catch a break. After gifting the residents of Boston’s South End with a 100 foot long rainbow “Abraham Obama” wheatpaste poster mural depicting the image of presidential hopeful BARACK OBAMA melded with the portrait of America’s 16th president, the city’s residents are crying for its removal. Not on political or even aesthetic grounds—though the installation has polarized viewers on both topics—but for the hundreds of illegal posters that have since popped up on walls around the city. Installed legally to commemorate the opening of Boston’s GALLERY XIV political art show “A Politic,” it seems our resident Popagandist made plentiful black & white copies of his hybrid portrait available free of charge to the show’s attendees who have since taken it upon themselves to plaster the images on nearly every flat vertical surface around town. With the gallery fielding angry calls from the Mayor’s office and MSNBC reporting nationally on the event, it seems young Abe’s days might be numbered. Enjoy it while you can. McSupersized and Banksy had a daughter and she’s quite lovely…

Supertouch’s own RON ENGLISH was out in London this past weekend in full force at BANKSY’s first public stencil art convention, THE CANS FESTIVAL, where his alter ego McSUPERSIZED tagged along to entertain the kids. While in town Ron managed to liberate a few billboards with his signature brand of “Popaganda,” and attend the opening of his joint art exhibition “The Adam & Ron Show” co-starring British painter ADAM NEATE at the venerable ELMS LESTERS PAINTING ROOMS where the queue of punters lined up to get a look at the art was nearly as long as the one to get into the Cans Fest. NYC///ART CRIMES///ESPO UNVEILS “WATERBOARD THRILL RIDE” ON CONEY ISLAND…

espoconey3.jpg

As we previously reported, New York artist STEVE POWERS (aka: ESPO) has been working on a torture-themed art project for a while now and in conjunction with CREATIVE TIME as part of its national public art initiative “Democracy in America: The National Campaign,” he’s just opened the Guantanamo Bay-themed “Waterboard Thrill Ride” on Coney Island in the shadow of the legendary Cyclone roller coaster and Nathan’s hot dog stand in an empty storefront on West 12th Street. When a dollar is fed into a machine standing outside Powers’ mock jail cell installation featuring paintings by the artist inside and out, viewers can climb a short flight of steps to peer through cell bars and view an animatronic torture scene of a hooded jailer pouring water down the throat of an orange jumpsuit wearing Gitmo detainee…

BOOKSMART///INSIDE PETER BESTE’S “TRUE NORWEIGAN BLACK METAL”…

pbeste41.jpg

For those scratching their heads at the sight of the following images, in the last two decades a bizarre and violent musical subculture called Black Metal has emerged in Norway. It has its roots in a heady blend of splatter movies, heavy metal music, Satanism, Pagan mythology and adolescent angst. In the early-mid 1990’s, members of this extremist underground committed murder, burned down medieval wooden churches, and desecrated graveyards…

NYC///SOUND & VISION///MUST-SEE SHOW: DAVID BYRNE’S “PLAYING THE BUILDING” INSTALLATION…

byrnepiano11.jpg

Talking Heads founder DAVID BYRNE has had one of the most varied and original careers in rock, constantly vacillating between the worlds of music and visual art with rare grace. Throwing yet another curveball through the rarified air of NYC’s art world, Byrne presents music as art in “Playing the Building,” his new CREATIVE TIME-sponsored 9,000-square-foot, interactive, site-specific installation that transforms the interior of the landmark Battery Maritime Building in Lower Manhattan into a massive sound sculpture that all visitors are invited to sit and “play”…
