LONDON///CELESTE BOURSIER-MOUGENOT’S ROCK ART INSTALLATION AT BARBICAN GALLERY

February 16, 2010  |  art, News, Rock of Ages, Sound + Vision  |  Comments Off

French artist CELESTE BOURSIER-MOUGENOT has taken "rock art" to new levels in London with her installation for the BARBICAN ART GALLERY's new "Curve" series by enclosing live electric guitars in a room inhabited by a flock of birds. The results sound a lot like a Sonic Youth album:

"Céleste Boursier-Mougenot creates works by drawing on the rhythms of daily life to produce sound in unexpected ways. Boursier-Mougenot’s installation for The Curve, his first solo exhibition in the UK, takes the form of a walk-though aviary for a flock of zebra finches, furnished with electric guitars and other musical instruments. As the birds go about their routine activities, perching on or feeding from the various pieces of equipment, they create a random and captivating soundscape.

Also included in the installation is a series of videos that feature close ups of hands playing electric guitars. However, the sounds that accompany the footage do not emanate from the guitars. Instead we hear an insect-like drone produced by the amplification of the video signal.

NEWS///POLITIKS///M.I.A. TALKS TERRORISM

Portrait of M.I.A by Greg Gossel from The Shooting Gallery's upcoming Grammy art show in LA...

This year she's been nominated for a Grammy and an Oscar, but musician & artist (her first solo show was in 2001 in London) M.I.A. has more pressing issues on her mind, namely the nearly totally unreported genocide currently being perpetrated in her homeland of SRI LANKA where she's officially been labeled a "terrorist" by the government (to her credit, she was denied entrance to the US by the Bush administration under the same classification). In an interview with favorite ST news site THE DAILY BEAST, the currently preggers and nearly ready-to-pop singer declared: “The situation is systematic genocide, ethnic cleansing ... “I want my fans to know I’m not tryin’ to be like Bono. Someone Irish talking about what’s going on in Africa. I actually come from there and the fact is that this is happening now. The war has been going on for a long time, but it stepped into the genocide bracket recently with the new President. I lived in Sri Lanka when the campaign for ethnic cleansing started and if I could stop it and see the end of it in my lifetime that would be amazing. I can’t justify my success otherwise. I can’t justify getting nominated for an Oscar or a Grammy, that to me wouldn’t mean anything if I don’t actually get to speak about this. It’s not like I’m trying to sell records, I’m trying to stop the death of 350,000 people this month.” Click HERE to read more...

The song may suck, but the video for upstart Pop trio NATALIE PORTMAN'S SHAVED HEAD's single, "Sophisticated Side Ponytail" is an unbridled explosion of cheap visual thrills proving that in an age of nonexistent music video budgets, cool stuff can still be made for next to nothing. And on a Mac, at that...

Pettibon's ode to Charlie Manson...

Putting a nice cap to a typically balmy LA summer is the phenomenal retrospective of landmark 1980s drawings by seminal punk artist RAYMOND PETTIBON at West Hollywood's REGEN PROJECTS opening this weekend. Culled from both the artist's personal archives and the gallery's collection of vintage work, the art presented here covers the years 1979—1989, Pettibon's most fertile and landmark period. It was during this time of economic and social upheaval in the Southland that Pettibon's iconic style was set in stone and he began illustrating Black Flag's album covers and show flyers, putting an indelible visual stamp on the erupting hardcore punk movement that would define the sound of the era. NY-LA///SOUND + VISION///”88 BOADRUM”: THE SOUND OF 176 DRUMMERS DRUMMING…

Commemorating the opening of the 29th OLYMPIC GAMES in Beijing and the global launch of NIKE SPORTSWEAR, the massive and thundering drumming event known as “88 BOADRUM” was held simultaneously in New York and Los Angeles on August 8, 2008 (aka 08.08.08). In order to create an aural spectacle worthy of the historic occasion, Japanese noise avatars THE BOREDOMS teamed up with NYC art rockers GANG GANG DANCE to perform an 88-minute composition beginning at precisely 8:08 PM on either coast. With the Boredoms ensconced in LA’s historic La Brea Tar Pits, and Gang Gang Dance lining Brooklyn’s Williamsburg waterfront, each group was surrounded by a massive spiral of 88 drummers thundering away in improbably synchronous harmony to create an echoing score that could be heard for miles. In light of a recently published BBC article attesting that rock drummers and performance athletes enjoy comparable cardiovascular fitness levels, a more fitting tribute could not be had.
