Few things could be more of a surefire mega-moneymaker for art world puppet master Larry Gagosian than to stage a show of large scale pop art cowboy paintings in the wild west town of Los Angeles. Here, self-styled movie industry cowboys & girls are the big guns, shelling out massive sums for huge canvases to brighten up their vast expanses of open wall space. Hence, it should come as no surprise that Hollywood's biggest players pulled every string at their disposal to score one of the Technicolor trophies on display at Richard Prince's current show at Gagosian Gallery, "Cowboys" (on display till April 6th), to brighten up their next Beverly Hills dinner party. LA might not be ground zero for the next visual renaissance (at least not from how things are looking as of late), but it is home to some solid decorative art. Enter SYLIVA JI who's been painting for some time now in a fun style that might be best described as Nagel Vs. Gustav Klimt on Dia De los Muertos. Her solid new solo exhibition "Haute Eopch" at Culver City's COREY HELFORD GALLERY featuring Ji's usual array of painted doomsday femme fatales opened to a packed house on Saturday nite where the looks made it worth the drive and the ratio of lovely ladies to men was advantageously high. Wolverine should keep his dance routines to himself in the future. Too bad STILLER didn't win a statue for this performance...
It really does seem like only yesterday that ripping surfer chick and art connoisseur MARSEA GOLDBERG opened the doors to her NEW IMAGE ART GALLERY. In that time the West Hollywood hotspot has been a home (oftentimes literally) to a vast array of the underground art world's young upstarts and a proven incubator for talent that has nurtured the careers of Ed Templeton, Clare Rojas, Jo Jackson, Judith Supine, Tauba Auerbach, Matt Leines, Jeff Soto, Taylor McKimens, Chris Johanson, Phil Frost, Jordin Isip, The Date Farmers, David Ellis, Barry McGee, Ashley Macomber, Os Gemeos, Neck Face and Thomas Campbell, to name a few, all of whom are among the contributors to "15 Years," the space's impressive celebratory group show that opened on Saturday nite. Of course, LA's hipster elite turned out in full force to help mark the occasion, bolstered no doubt by a special live performance by rippers NO AGE and an endless supply of free booze. Last nite, graffiti gremlin NECK FACE took advantage of some down time between billboard postings on the front wall of Hollywood fashion hotspot BARRACUDA to leave a note for freshly-inaugurated President OBAMA. Representing "la gente" to the fullest, Nasty Neck lets the Big O know his economic reform package should indeed be the first order of business this week: "we don't need change, we need dollars, homie!" In other news, Barracuda is expanding to include an art gallery component this summer. Stay tuned to Supertouch for details coming soon. HAVE A LOOK: Read More
Supertouch's own RON ENGLISH has been a very busy man in LA and Seattle this week following his stop in DC to celebrate BARACK OBAMA's inauguration on Tuesday. Located at the corner of Pico & Fairfax in Hollywood, this newly "liberated" billboard features Ron's iconic "Abraham Obama" hybrid portrait created for the Big O's presidential campaign last year. In his aptly-titled new show "She" opening tomorrow nite at MICHAEL KOHN GALLERY, art star RICHARD PRINCE pays ample tribute to the LA-centric institutions of female nudity and car culture with the facility of someone well acquainted with the finer nuances of both. The centerpiece of the show—a split exhibition with Prince's late artist friend WALLACE BERMAN—is a 1986 El Camino wrapped by Prince in an array of photos from his "Girlfriends" series that makes it the perfect Hollywood cruiser for any nite of the week. Fleshing out the exhibition (literally) are offerings from his ongoing series of "Nurse" collages and large scale C-prints from his "Girlfriends" series alongside a real mailbox plastered in vintage black & white porn images that breathes new life into the stale governmental institution. A VIP reception tonite with Prince in attendance will be the hot ticket of the early LA art calendar, and you can expect ample coverage on tomorrow's ST. Meanwhile, HAVE A LOOK: Read More
In town for his ROUGE STATUS opening in Venice last weekend, London bad boy wall banger INSA did a little Hollywood swingin and dropped in on BARRACUDA for a little rooftop renovation, adding his trademark high-heels to the sunset skyline in the process. HAVE A LOOK: Read More
