BOSTON///POPAGANDA///RON ENGLISH’S “ABRAHAM OBAMA” CONTROVERSY…

July 15th, 2008

Looks like being considered a Muslim is the least of Barack’s 99 problems now…

It seems that Supertouch’s own RON ENGLISH can’t catch a break. After gifting the residents of Boston’s South End with a 100 foot long rainbow “Abraham Obama” wheatpaste poster mural depicting the image of presidential hopeful BARACK OBAMA melded with the portrait of America’s 16th president, the city’s residents are crying for its removal. Not on political or even aesthetic grounds—though the installation has polarized viewers on both topics—but for the hundreds of illegal posters that have since popped up on walls around the city. Installed legally to commemorate the opening of Boston’s GALLERY XIV political art show “A Politic,” it seems our resident Popagandist made plentiful black & white copies of his hybrid portrait available free of charge to the show’s attendees who have since taken it upon themselves to plaster the images on nearly every flat vertical surface around town. With the gallery fielding angry calls from the Mayor’s office and MSNBC reporting nationally on the event, it seems young Abe’s days might be numbered. Enjoy it while you can. LA///POLITIKS///OBAMA ANNOUNCES HIS VP CANDIDATE: SHEPARD FAIREY…

July 11th, 2008

Barack Obama with Amanda and Shepard “Hussein” Fairey in LA…

While we assumed that Supertouch’s own SHEPARD FAIREY would be getting the official “First Artist” nod for his campaign artwork once BARACK OBAMA takes office, we’re as shocked as anyone to find out he’s chosen the LA street artist as his VP candidate (although Jesse Jackson was a front runner). The pair met in Hollywood last week for a covert strategy session where this photo was taken to commemorate the event. And no that’s not background noise in the photo, it’s stardust in the air. Well, actually, glitter. Obama is serious about his party favors…

WTF?!? FILES///POLITIKS///OBAMA SUPPORTERS TAKE HIS NAME AS THEIR OWN…

July 10th, 2008

First Artist Shepard “Hussein” Fairey?…

First the presumptive next president has a street artist with an arrest record cranking out his campaign artwork, now a legion of BARACK OBAMA’s most devoted supporters are adding his name into their own—sometimes legally—as an overt show of allegiance. The most common insertion is the inclusion of Obama’s controversially Muslim middle name “Hussein,” which has been a target of right wing attention since conservative radio host, Bill Cunningham, scornfully repeated Obama’s middle name three times while introducing John McCain at a campaign rally in February. A typical example of Obama’s newfound extended family: “My name is such a vanilla, white-girl American name,” said Ashley “Hussein” Holmes of Indianapolis, who changed her name online “to show how little meaning ‘Hussein’ really has.” READ ON: Read the rest of this entry »

THE ART OF POLITICS
By ROB WALKER
SOURCE: NYTimes Published: April 13, 2008

Whether or not Barack Obama would make a good president, it’s clear that he makes an excellent muse. It’s hard to think of a political candidate in recent memory who has, in real time, inspired so much creativity, exercised free of charge and for the campaign’s benefit. Perhaps this suggests something about Obama—or maybe it suggests something about his supporters. The examples are many. One of the most prominent is the limited-edition print created by the Los Angeles artist Shepard Fairey in January. Fairey is best known as the creator of the “Obey Giant” imagery that, beginning in 1989, spread on city streets around the world by way of posters, stickers and stencils. Fairey made a brief statement when he unveiled the portrait, noting his “great conviction that Barack Obama should be the next President.” Poster sales, he added, would underwrite “a large statewide poster campaign.” In addition to popping up on many streets, the image later made its way onto a T-shirt, created in collaboration with the San Francisco street-wear brand Upper Playground — and apparently onto the radar of the Obama campaign. The candidate himself sent a thank-you note, and his campaign had Fairey create a new poster that became the inaugural offering in an “Artists for Obama” section of the barackobama.com online store. Fairey told Creativity Online that while he has been politically active, there’s something new in the enthusiasm he now professes to feel. “I just thought it was time to stick my neck out,” he said. NYC///ART CRIMES///ESPO UNVEILS “WATERBOARD THRILL RIDE” ON CONEY ISLAND…

espoconey3.jpg

As we previously reported, New York artist STEVE POWERS (aka: ESPO) has been working on a torture-themed art project for a while now and in conjunction with CREATIVE TIME as part of its national public art initiative “Democracy in America: The National Campaign,” he’s just opened the Guantanamo Bay-themed “Waterboard Thrill Ride” on Coney Island in the shadow of the legendary Cyclone roller coaster and Nathan’s hot dog stand in an empty storefront on West 12th Street. When a dollar is fed into a machine standing outside Powers’ mock jail cell installation featuring paintings by the artist inside and out, viewers can climb a short flight of steps to peer through cell bars and view an animatronic torture scene of a hooded jailer pouring water down the throat of an orange jumpsuit wearing Gitmo detainee…

BOOKSMART///INSIDE PETER BESTE’S “TRUE NORWEIGAN BLACK METAL”…

pbeste41.jpg

For those scratching their heads at the sight of the following images, in the last two decades a bizarre and violent musical subculture called Black Metal has emerged in Norway. It has its roots in a heady blend of splatter movies, heavy metal music, Satanism, Pagan mythology and adolescent angst. In the early-mid 1990’s, members of this extremist underground committed murder, burned down medieval wooden churches, and desecrated graveyards…

Throwing yet another curveball through the rarified air of NYC’s art world, Byrne presents music as art in “Playing the Building,” his new CREATIVE TIME-sponsored 9,000-square-foot, interactive, site-specific installation that transforms the interior of the landmark Battery Maritime Building in Lower Manhattan into a massive sound sculpture that all visitors are invited to sit and “play”…
