The only redeeming aspect of the culture killer that is X GAMES is the annual appearance of Icarus himself, aka: DANNY WAY. This year was no exception. “Balls of steel” begins to describe this drop in…

SK8 THING///THE GENIUS OF RODNEY MULLEN…
August 4th, 2008With the corporate youth culture marketing exercise known as X GAMES upon us, we thought it was the right time to take a look back at some highlights from the career of a man whose futuristic style wrote the book for what would be known as street skating in the 21st century: one RODNEY MULLEN. Back in ‘84 what he did on a shapeless band-aid board was called “freestyle” and his tech-obsessed, kickflip powered riding was awe-inspiring but relegated to the ranks of sideshow acts like Primo & Diane and his signature Powell Peralta deck was the company’s worst selling model. In hindsight, he was a good 20+ years ahead of his time. We still don’t even understand half of what we’re watching here:

NYC///RYAN McGINNESS FINDS ANIMAL CHIN AT PS1…
April 18th, 2008NYC-based graphic/fine artist RYAN McGINNES‘ skateboarding-themed mural, “Have You Seen Him,” originally created for the container exhibition at Art Basel Miami 2007 has just been installed in the courtyard of progressive art institution PS1 in Long Island City where it will remain on display until May 3rd. The 200-foot-long panoramic mural consisting of 50 individual enamel paintings is based on the “Citizen Kane” of skate videos, Powell Peralta’s epic “The Search For Animal Chin,” from 1987, and incorporates visual and narrative themes from the seminal Craig Stecyk (nee John Smythe) penned masterpiece. ART & COMMERCE///SUPREME x MARILYN MINTER…
March 31st, 2008In yet another puzzling curveball of an artist collab, elite skate brand SUPREME has just announced a new series of boards featuring details of large-scale paintings by one of our favorite photorealistic painters, artist MARILYN MINTER. Releasing in NY & LA Supreme shops on April 10th, on April 12th in Japan, and online on April 17th, the decks represent a new head-scratching alliance for the company because it just makes us wonder, do skaters really want these? Skating’s increasing move towards the highbrow world of couture fashion, bling, and fine art seems in stark contrast to the outlaw sport’s roots and Supreme’s admittedly envelope-pushing collaborations seem to be leading the charge. Don’t get us wrong, Minter is one of the most phenomenal painters of her generation, but does this really make sense to skateboarding culture? For those unfamiliar with Minter, the 60-year-0ld Louisiana born New York artist excels at intensely lifelike photorealistic painting and the former wild girl (minter lost herself in Manhattan’s club scene through the ’70s & ’80s) was the star of 2006’s coveted Whitney Biennial—the New York art world’s most formal stamp of approval—and at the time, some of the artwork from the show appeared on billboards around the city simultaneously. It was a long ways from her days as an artist in the late ’80s when a series of wok based on hardcore porn drew the scorn of art critics and feminists. Now, enjoying the ultimate last laugh, Minter’s art star glows bright in the stratosphere, and apparently, in the skate world’s nite sky too. HAVE A LOOK:
