French photographer/street artist JR, best known for his technique of photographing inhabitants of an area & pasting the resulting imagery up on grand scale around the community, has taken to the favelas of RIO DE JANEIRO in a grand project to honor the female residents of one of the world’s biggest slums in a hillside installation called “28 Millimetres: Women”. Following in the footsteps of his recent large-scale installation in Spain, JR has truly outdone himself with this massive paste up, the scope of which is simply stunning. Yue Minjun’s “Mr Pink” gets shy…

As we mentioned previously, perennial ST homeboy KAWS teamed up with Chinese Pop Art god YUE MINJUN to create a special figure for the MUSEUM OF TOMORROW’s “fine art toy” show titled “Art For The Masses” that opened last week in Taipei. Featuring new sculpts displayed alongside original artworks by ZHOU TIEN HAI, LIU YE, JING YU, ZHOU CHUN YA, the show is the first to address the genre for a Chinese audience incorporating domestic modern artists. All figures have been produced in runs of 100 pieces for sale in complete sets only at the museum and are not being distributed domestically. And yes, they’re expensive. Better known as the “Olympics of the art world,” the mammoth art convention that is the real ART BASEL, as in Basel Switzerland, not Miami, was in full effect last week in the land of money and chocolate. Luckily, our international man of mystery MISTER G was on the spot to take in the debauchery and bring us a glimpse of some of the exhibition’s greatest hits. Also on display at this year’s Basel—now in its 38th year—was NIKE’s aesthetic celebration of the checkered ball in the form of “ART/OF/FOOTBALL,” a user generated content exhibition curated in conjunction with SHOWstudio as part of Basel’s DESIGN/MIAMI fair.
